Nottingham Trent University and Amberol

The Need:

Family-run firm Amberol have been manufacturing and supplying self-watering flower planters to local authorities for 40 years. They were interested in expanding their range to take advantage of the emerging domestic market for ‘grow your own’ fruit and vegetables, approaching Nottingham Trent University’s Future Factory for support in testing and trialling their product.

The Solution:

Amberol received a tailored support package including: (UL)

6 days’ worth of expert support and advice covering initial research, concept design, prototyping and a project report
Independent growing trials were carried out by NTU, comparing the new planter to existing growing solutions
Marketing expertise will be provided as the company takes the product to market
Cash contribution towards essential materials

Outcome:

The project has been very successful. Amberol Director, Tim Troman is thrilled with the results of the growing trial and the impact these results will have, coming from an impartial and well-respected source. They have also appreciated the project’s networking opportunities. Thecompany will take the product to market and continue to receive marketing support to realise this goal.

Sustainability:

As a company Amberol has had an keen interest in sustainability and the enhancement of public spaces.

It is hoped this new product will expand on this ethos by providing the opportunity for those with little outside space to grow their own food. The system saves water and encourages a beneficial approach to health and wellbeing.
