The University of Hertfordshire and industry leading experts BRE Group and Rothamsted Research are providing access to facilities, incubation and research to provide a unique and exciting opportunity for innovators to collectively address the Industrial Strategy Grand Challenges and drive forward innovation in Hertfordshire.

When universities, businesses and communities come together, they can create something game changing – a legacy that leads industries, drives economies and improves lives. The University of Hertfordshire is coming together with established research institutions BRE Group, Rothamsted Research alongside Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership, Hertfordshire County Council, St Albans City and District Council and Dacorum Borough Council to form Hertfordshire IQ, a highly specialised, sustainable Enterprise Zone.

A dynamic innovation destination

When universities, businesses and communities come together, they can create something game changing – a legacy that leads industries, drives economies and improves lives.

Just 30 minutes outside London, Hertfordshire IQ sits at the heart of a thriving business community, but over the next decade it will grow into something unique – a globally renowned centre of excellence in green technology, and a fantastic place to live, work and change our world.

Across seven sustainably built sites, Hertfordshire IQ will provide 3 million ft2 of commercial space and 8,000 new jobs. All of this will sit at the centre of the Hemel Hempstead Garden Communities – 10,000 new homes with exceptional transport links, schools, amenities and green spaces.

From offices and co-working spaces to laboratories and hybrid industrial, warehousing and manufacturing units, the quarter’s workspaces will house up to 800 innovative businesses of all sizes. Via Hertfordshire IQ businesses demonstrating their green credentials will be eligible for a level of tax relief and all businesses will have the opportunity to collaborate with founding partners and new neighbours on groundbreaking green-tech initiatives.

Creating a sustainable community

We are connecting business to the right skills and knowledge to develop product ideas and reach new markets. Our education and skills development offer including Degree Apprenticeships and in partnership with our local further education colleges are creating opportunities for the brightest talent to help drive productivity now and in the future.

Julie Newlan Pro Vice-Chancellor (Business and International Development) and Hertfordshire Enterprise Zone Board Member said: “Enterprise Zones have already attracted over £4bn of private-sector investment and created over 51,000 jobs. They’re a proven, powerful way to turn regional expertise into global strengths. That’s what we’re doing with Hertfordshire IQ – collaborating to create a self-sustaining hub of tech, talent and research that proves the UK is a phenomenal place to do business.”

By bringing these ambitious businesses together, The University of Hertfordshire is proud to be part of a community that can grow together – commercialising research, boosting product development, reaching brand new markets and importantly increasing productivity.
