The ESRC/HEFCE Centre for Global Higher Education (CGHE) will be launching on 2-3 February 2016 in London.
The launch will be the first opportunity to tap into a major new social science research centre on higher education and to hear about significant new research in global higher education. On the morning of 2 February, three leading international academics will reveal their findings at the opening seminar.
UCL Institute of Education’s Dr John Jerrim will discuss access to higher education and the effects of rising income inequality and social mobility. He will question public assumptions about tuition fees, revealing their true implications. His research will also analyse understandings of the costs and benefits of higher education and look at the critical role of secondary school achievement in widening access to higher education.
The combined pressures of funding, competition and globalisation are altering higher education in unforeseen ways and on a global scale, shaping national futures. Professor Robert J. W. Tijssen from Leiden University will reveal the extent to which these changes are being captured by world university rankings. Which principles should we adopt to improve our measurement of 21st century trends in higher education and research?
Professor Ko Ha Mok from Lingnan University will address the challenges and prospects for higher education in Asia and the implications for the UK. In the last 20 years, governments in Asia have expanded higher education on a massive scale to meet pressing development needs on social demand from the burgeoning middle class. Professor Mok’s research shows how the ‘massification’ and marketization of higher education has impacted on quality, research capacity building and graduate employment.
The second day’s seminar, on the afternoon of 3 February, will be a discussion forum focused specifically on the notion and practice of ‘impact’ in higher education and research. Alis Oancea from the University of Oxford will examine the networks and narratives of research impacts, while Professor Paul Ashwin from Lancaster University will discuss conceptual issues in measuring the impact of higher education. Also speaking will be David Sweeney, Director of Research, Education & Knowledge Exchange at the Higher Education Funding Council of England (HEFCE).
CGHE’s team of national and international researchers will be on hand and participating throughout both events.
