The UK’s largest business and university relationship has been cemented with new joint facilities that will expand the scope of knowledge exchange.

University of Southampton Marine & Maritime Institute and Lloyd’s Register engineers will be working alongside each other in new campus buildings, including joint research to improve ship design, for example to reduce fuel consumption, and Lloyds engineers supervising Master’s and PhD research projects.

The buildings offer “unique facilities that both will be making use of. This will really promote the possibility of informal interactions. It’s bringing in a whole raft of additional companies” said Don Spalinger, Director of Research and Innovation Services at the University of Southampton.

“I think the huge benefit for Lloyds register is the capability that this relationship gives us” commented Julian Burr from Lloyd’s while Director of the Marine & Maritime Institute, Professor Ajit Shenoi, highlighted how professional expertise would raise the educational standards of courses at Southampton; the partnership would produce “better trained” students.
