City, University of London’s Artificial Intelligence Research Centre and Institute for Cyber Security will lead two new doctoral training programmes beginning in the 2019-2020 academic year, supported by the European digital innovation and entrepreneurial education organisation EIT Digital.
DTP in Artificial Intelligence
Launched in July 2019, the Artificial Intelligence Research Centre (CitAI) brings together expertise in the development and implementation of AI technology and their application to, among other areas, energy, transport, health and wellbeing, and finance as well as in the legal, ethical and social impact of AI.
Lead by the Centre, the new doctoral training programme (DTP) in Artificial Intelligence will enable the commercial deployment of AI technology in Europe and other regions by developing critical interdisciplinary capabilities in AI technology, with applications for solving real-life industrial problems.
Dr Eduardo Alonso, Director of City’s Artificial Intelligence Research Centre (CitAI) and lead for City’s Master’s programme in AI, will oversee this DTP, which will be carried out in partnership with founding partners Delta Capital Ltd, Telefónica Innovación Alpha SL and Bosch AA-AS. The Delta Capital Studentship is focused on the design and evaluation of end to end, secure, efficient privacy-preserving deep learning; and the Bosch Automotive Service Solutions studentship is centred on developing novel AI algorithms for predicting and specifying repair and maintenance requirements of vehicles in connected environments.
DTP in Cyber Security
City’s Institute for Cyber Security will lead the second DTP addressing the cyber security issues of preeminent concern to European society and businesses. It will be developing interdisciplinary capabilities in the technical, organisational and social aspects of cyber security, with applications to concrete solutions of industrial interest.
The Director of City’s Centre for Software Reliability, Professor Lorenzo Strigini, will oversee this new programme, associated with the Digital Infrastructure Focus Area within EIT Digital’s organisation. British Telecom (BT), BAE Systems, and the Connected Places Catapult are the founding partners with City’s Institute for Cyber Security (ICS) on this DTP.
ICS was launched in March 2019 and is led by Professor Muttukrishnan Rajarajan. The Centre, focused on tackling the global challenges in privacy, trust and security, brings together world class scholars and a considerable body of scholarship in cyber security education, research and innovation, carried out across the University.
Collaboration to drive Europe’s digital transformation
Professor Rajkumar Roy, Dean of City’s School of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering, is delighted with the establishment of both DTPs: “We are very pleased to be supported by EIT Digital with regard to both doctoral training programmes.
