Invite-only NCUB–UKRI Roundtable on Research IP
This high-level roundtable, hosted jointly by the National Centre for Universities and Business (NCUB) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), explores how the UK retains and grows value from the intellectual property and knowledge assets created through publicly funded research.
UKRI is reviewing its IP policies and procedures, building on its recent Intellectual Property Position Statement. The statement sets out a whole-system commitment to the effective use and exploitation of IP, its expectations of those receiving UKRI investment, and its responsibility to maximise the economic, social and cultural benefits to the UK.
As part of this work, UKRI is exploring how grant and investment terms and conditions could evolve to better:
- support the anchoring of IP and knowledge assets in the UK
- ensure that, where IP created with UKRI support is transferred overseas, there is an appropriate return in value to the UK and to taxpayers
UKRI wants to test its emerging thinking directly with senior business leaders, alongside their work with universities, investors and fellow funders. Your perspective on how these terms would land in practice, and what would help rather than hinder investment and commercialisation, would be invaluable to the discussion.
The roundtable will be conducted under the Chatham House Rule to allow for an open and candid conversation.
