The Business Engagement team has brought the project at the heart of the University of Birmingham’s strategic relationship with Twycross Zoo to life through a new animation.
The collaborative research project led by Dr. Susannah Thorpe of the College of Life and Environmental Sciences and Dr. Charlotte Macdonald, Director of Life Sciences at Twycross Zoo, developed a computer programme that can be used to design zoo enclosures for apes.
The environments designed by the programme don’t look like rainforest canopies but do mimic them mechanically. These dynamic structures present the chimpanzees with the physical and mental challenges they would face in the wild, ensuring they remain strong and quick witted.
The impact of the initial project has led to further research, student placements and graduate careers. Our partnership has expanded beyond the School of Biosciences to include the School of Psychology and the Birmingham Business School, allowing us to explore many strands for future collaborations.
