Success story from Cranfield University
A multidisciplinary research group at Cranfield University are developing the Nano Membrane Toilet (NMT), a reinvented toilet that treats human waste onsite without external energy or water.
Cranfield University and Jomoo will combine their expertise to commercialise the NMT. The collaboration will have two stages; late stage product development where complete integrated NMTs will be produced and human user tested, followed by the manufacture and commercialisation. Jomoo will manufacture and sell the NMT in China. Both Cranfield and Jomoo are committed in making the NMT available to Global Access territories all round the world, for which additional commercial partners will be sought.
The NMT is designed for single household use and can treat human waste without being connected to an external water supply or sewage network. A full visual and odour barrier separates the waste collection tank from the user. Lifting and closing the toilet lid powers a screw that separates the waste. The liquid waste is heated allowing water vapour to pass through a membrane barrier so that water can be safely disposed into the environment. The solid waste is incinerated, generating the heat required to treat the liquid waste, and disposed of as ash.
Professor Sean Tyrrel, NMT project manager said: “For over five years many Cranfield University academics and students have been committed to addressing the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Reinvent the Toilet Challenge. We have taken the NMT from initial conception to field trial testing early prototypes, and we are now delighted to be partnering the Jomoo and look forward to bringing the NMT to market.
Mr. Xiaowei Lin, Head of the R & D department, Jomoo said: “as the leading sanitary company in China, we are very excited to be partnering with Cranfield university in developing and commercialisation the NMT, a truly revolutionary toilet. We view the NMT as a transformative sanitation solution that is perfectly suited for households with no sewer connections and the rural market”.
