Researcher mobility between industry and academia

Leveraging the unique datasets generated by our konfer digital brokerage platform, we are exploring researcher mobility and the relationship between researcher mobility and research outputs.

There is growing interest in the extent to which researchers move between academia and industry careers, but limited evidence and data is available. NCUB has designed a new approach, extracting data from researchers’ ORCID profiles to better understand their career paths and extent of mobility.

A pilot study of researchers based at seven UK universities is taking place, with the opportunity to expand the study to data on up to 117 universities. The pilot explores the extent towards researchers are mobile, at what stage of their career researchers are most likely to be mobile, whether they have more experience in academia or outside, and whether certain sectors have greater mobility than others.
