A two-year KTP allowed the ASPG to work with the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) – a unique purpose-built, accredited open-sea facility which supports the development of wave and tidal energy converters.

The KTP challenge

When adding environmental and condition monitoring to its portfolio, the Centre needed to access advanced technical expertise in underwater acoustics to establish the new service.

As a result of the KTP, EMEC has developed acoustic calibration, quality control and analysis protocols as well as equipment and survey methodology updates, including device noise and operational surveys.

The benefits

Today, the Centre offers acoustic monitoring services and device diagnostics to its clients – rather than having to sub-contract this activity. The KTP also enabled EMEC to produce procedures and guidance on acoustic monitoring in line with regulatory requirements.

The knowledge and expertise generated by the project has been embedded at the Centre via training delivered by the KTP Associate – who is still employed at the Centre.
