The EADS Foundation Wales provides a centre for research and development in Security, Mobility and the Environment to support sustainable development.
It’s a unique collaboration between global aviation giant EADS, Cardiff University and the Welsh government.
Rather than a research grant model, “it’s put together so that all the partners have an output” explained Gary Clayton, Operational Manager at EADS.
A ‘wave process’ allows ideas from SMEs or academia to be researched and developed, with PhD students both working on and reviewing projects.
Intellectual property produced belongs to the foundation itself meaning that if EADS or the government don’t directly apply findings they can be utilised by SMEs or academia.
This major success story shows the value of ongoing collaboration between higher education, business and government above individual grants and projects. The ongoing work of the EADS Foundation makes accessing resources quicker for new ideas from a range of sources.
