The University of Leicester puts a great deal of time and energy into the employability of our students. So much so, that we’ve even set up our own recruitment agency.

Based within the Career Development Service, Unitemps is here to encourage our students to gain paid work experience during their study whilst providing employers easy access to a flexible and talented pool of workers.

Unitemps was set up collaboratively by the University of Leicester and De Montfort University to create paid part time work opportunities for students at both institutions. Its aim, to offer students in Leicester the opportunity to gain valuable transferable skills, such as customer service skills, social skills and work ethic, by undertaking different roles during their first and second years.  All revenue generated by Unitemps is reinvested into University activities to enhance other employability projects for students.

Unitemps’ dedicated team has worked hard to engage with employers by networking and building strong working relationships with a wide range of companies.  As a result, since its establishment, it has been successful in partnering with more than 250 companies over the previous 3 years with around 1000 various shifts covered.  These work experiences have ranged from a few hours of work to ongoing temporary work placements.

These companies have benefited from access to temporary staff, sometimes at very short notice, whilst avoiding a lengthy administration processes involved in getting new starters enrolled into their payroll system.

A case in point has been the work conducted in 2015 with Leicester City Football Club (LCFC).

LCFC were seeking 27 staff to work at every home game to audit the tickets that home supporters were entering the ground with.  Over the season, approximately 100 students worked on this task and the Football Club were impressed with the calibre of students who took part.

Aware of the principle aims of Unitemps to help develop students’ transferable skills, LCFC were also active in supporting students’ development by providing constructive feedback on their performance, training and coaching support.

Here is just some of the feedback Unitemps has received from participating companies and students:

“We were particularly impressed with how well Unitemps were able to deliver on our requirements at short notice…Unitempts staff did a fantastic job in understanding quickly what was required and sticking to that task to get the job done”

Miranda Cannon
Director of Delivery, Communications and Political Governance
Leicester City Council

“The medical students were very flexible in their approach to the task in hand and from comments that they passed at the time felt they had benefited from the experience not only just financially but also in terms of experience.  I personally couldn’t have done this piece of work without you and would highly recommend your organised and efficient approach to anybody else who required conducting a similar [projects]”
Anne Hall,
NHS Project Manager – Transformation

“I would like to show my appreciation to Unitemps…without whom I would most definitely not be the person I am today”
Josh Hargreaves, Graduate
