University-SME Interaction report launch

Universities play a critical role in boosting the performance of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) through collaborative efforts like joint research, technology transfer, and knowledge exchange. These partnerships create benefits across the board, providing SME's with solutions, new knowledge, and enhancing their competitiveness. Universities gain real-world problems to solve, fostering applied research with direct applications. The outcomes drive innovation and economic growth. However, financial instability post-pandemic has hindered SMEs' ability to innovate due to debt and tighter lending conditions for research and development (R&D). The funding landscape has fragmented, impacting universities' ability to engage with SMEs. Bridging this funding gap is vital, especially with the absence of European Regional Development funding (ERDF). Challenges like access to skilled labour and government funding also require urgent attention. The National Centre for Universities and Business (NCUB) conducted UK-wide roundtables to address issues affecting SME-university collaboration, emphasizing SMEs' role in economic recovery and innovation-led growth.
