The 'Boardroom Challenge' that benefits students and a leading global company

One of the key success stories from my MBA studies at Leeds University Business School is how it helped me develop the relationship between my company, Premier Farnell and the University. We've formed a mutually beneficial partnership that has really helped our business and business students at the same time.

Since 2012, Premier Farnell has hosted over 200 high-calibre MBA and Executive-MBA students from Leeds University Business School as part of the ‘Boardroom Challenge’ module.

This activity integrates learning into a live boardroom situation. Working in groups the students simulate the behaviour of the Board of Premier Farnell in response to a given real life scenario or issue affecting the organisation.

With sales last year of £968m, the Group trades in Europe (as Farnell element14), North America (as Newark element14) and Asia-Pacific (as element14), supported by a global supply chain of more than 3,500 suppliers and an inventory profile developed to anticipate and meet its customers’ needs.

The rich blend of highly experienced senior Executive-MBA students and diverse international MBA students that take part in the boardroom challenge provide an invaluable source of objective insight into the real and complex issues affecting Premier Farnell as a global company.

A notable number of outputs and recommendations from the teams have been pursued further by us and implemented into our strategic planning and growth strategies. 

In return, this challenging and highly interactive activity has helped the students apply and test their leadership skills for personal and professional development. We work alongside the teams to provide them with regular feedback and help shape their thinking from a practical business standpoint.

As we now enter the third year of our partnership, we are already working on defining the challenge for the new cohorts. This collaboration with the University has been very exciting and we look forward to continued future opportunities of such kind.
